PSY 270: Statistics for Psychology (Fall 2005)

This course is designed to give a general introduction to the use of statistics in Psychology. This course will discuss some basics of statistics and probability, including measures of central ten­dency and variability, graphic methods and percentiles, linear correla­tion and regression, applications of the normal probability curve, and an introduction to statistical inference including t-tests, analysis of variance and chi-square.

Goals:

  1. Learn about the purpose of the use of statistics in psychological research
  2. Become familiar with basic statistical principles such as probability, samples and populations
  3. Learn how to compute basic descriptive statistics, including mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation and others
  4. Gain experience with a number of different statistical tests, including correlation, regression, t-tests, ANOVA, chi-square and others
  5. Be able to perform basic statistical calculations by hand
  6. Integrate knowledge of statistics and apply it to reading and understanding scientific papers
  7. Understand what statistical claims and terms mean when encountered in real-world situations
